What is the difference between a maker and a taker?

A maker is a trader who places an order that goes on the order book partially or fully, such as a limit order. Makers add liquidity to the market. A taker places an order that is immediately matched with an existing order on the book, thereby taking liquidity. Maker orders usually have lower fees than taker orders.
